# MEO participated in Discussion on Safe Migration and Refugee Issues Held at UNHCR Office
January 10, 2025

On December 5, 2024, We participated a discussion held at the UNHCR conference hall. The event included representatives from IOM, NGOs in Malaysia, community leaders, Australian refugee officials, and border forces, focusing on safe migration practices and the challenges faced by refugees.

During the meeting, participants emphasized that entering Australia by boat without proper authorization is not permitted. Attendees encouraged community leaders to repeatedly caution refugees not to trust smugglers’ claims about entering Australia illegally, as such actions would only waste money and time.

The session also highlighted the importance of honesty for those filling out Form 842, attending UNHCR interviews, or undergoing Australian embassy interviews. Participants were reminded to provide accurate information, fulfill all requirements, and avoid any form of dishonesty.

We also contributed by sharing insights into the challenges faced by refugees in Malaysia, including delays in obtaining UNHCR registration and common misunderstandings encountered during interviews. We used this opportunity to advocate for the refugee community, helping to bring clarity and solutions to support their migration journey and ensure their safety.
